Cranberry Bogs

Artist's statement:
My work is always about color. Cranberry bogs give me permission to use powerful warm hues horizontally in the landscape. The cranberry vines change color with the seasons from deep crimson to orange to green. The bogs are pink while in blossom and bright red when flooded for harvest. These horizontal planes are comprised of many layers of color: with the deeper tones set down under the vines and the top planes lightening into the distance. The straight plane of the bogs are softened by the curves around the edges. Water is often visible in the distance which supplies a pale, cool relief. The colors are altered by the direction of the light while circumnavigating the bogs on the dirt roads. They change from frontlit to sidelit to backlit. The cranberry bog is often set against the dark value of the vertical trees. The shapes are strengthened by the security of the close edge and the pull of the distance.
