Artist's statement

Abstract work liberates me from concerns with recognizable forms. It allows me to explore color for the pure sake of color. These abstracts are oil bars, liquin, and graphite on 4-ply rising vellum. Liquin and oil bars are the initial layer of color. As more oils are added, graphite is used to lift and drag the oil. Many layers of color are added, rubbed out, reapplied and scraped away. This process is the energy in the making of the work. The square format is constantly rotated to keep the composition evolving. Right side up is determined close to the finish. At this time, one or two colors remain dominant. The colors can be intense or subtle. It is this relationship of colors which remains the subject of the work.
